Animate Projects presents a film programme selected by freelance writer and curator, Karen Alexander, in association with Artangel's The Concise Dictionary of Dress at the V&A's Friday Late on 28 May.

Restless Visions: Animation at the Edge

For over twenty years Animate has collaborated with visual artists to produce ambitious productions, which offer a different ways of seeing the world. This short selection is evidence of the rich possibilities of their collaborations. From the bittersweet figurine whimsy of Barnaby Barford’s Damaged Goods (2008) to Stephen Irwin's award-winning dystopian vision in The Black Dog's Progress (2008) we see the director’s eagerness to merge ideas and practices from many different artforms. Their striking and often disturbing films range from abstraction Save Me (1994) to the surreal with The Phantom Museum (2003), proving that boundaries can be pushed and process explored without giving up on a sense of play and experimentation.

V&A's Friday Late: A fancy dress evening of words, music, games and film, inspired by Artangel's The Concise Dictionary of Dress at Blythe House, a V&A store. Dive into your dressing-up box and come as one of the Dictionary's key words - armoured, comfortable, conformist, creased, essential, fashionable, loose, measured, plain, pretentious or tight. Enjoy music, cocktails and a dress parade in the courtyard garden, word games around the museum, and film screenings and talks that play with ideas about the meaning of dress and how we feel about what we wear.

The Concise Dictionary of Dress is an Artangel collaboration with a psychoanalyst, Adam Phillips, a costume curator, Judith Clark, and Blythe House, the V&A’s working store for its art and design collections. It is the first time the V&A has opened Blythe House to the public, and the first time Artangel has worked in a fully working space. The Concise Dictionary of Dress is at Blythe House from 28 April to 27 June.
