Quarter

Artist's statement

This animation was made by drawing with water on a concrete wall and captured using four surveillance cameras.

I'm deeply interested in the way things move and in this residency I've been trying to make sense of the way abstract shapes might move in relation to the passing of natural light cycles. To put it simply, the animation works through the ways in which water makes stains on concrete, how it evaporates and reflects as daylight passes through the room.

I chose to use security cameras because they are cheap and my studio did not have a secure door that I could lock, but I was also inspired by the CCTV footage around Elephant and Castle - particularly the ways in which these simple cameras interpret colour differently.

Throughout my residency in Elephant and Castle I was interested in the development program of the local authority there. I was particularly intrigued by the marketing strategy of 'Regeneration through Re-branding', as I found myself amidst a 'new Cultural Quarter' at the 'heart of the Regeneration'.

So, I sat in on the local and community council meetings - ablaze with righteous jargon - and retreated back inside the studio to shepherd my water drawings through the faltering light.

('Regeneration' is when public money is used as an attempt to pump prime private investment into an area and 'Quarter' is estate agent speak).

Sound

The sound was recorded by sound artist Keith de Mendonca. He is a regular contributor of sound experiments to Radio Kinesonus in Tokyo, London's Resonance FM station, and supplied a composition to Silence Radio, Brussels.
