Synopsis

The Observer Series focuses on another of the natural sciences – physics - and over the course of three separate films explores common everyday phenomena such as magnetism and scattered light using macro photography.

Artist's Statement

The Observer Series continues my interest in documenting natural sciences and follow on from another observation piece I made in 2012 called Exhaustion.

Exhaustion’s focus was biology and conveyed an athlete’s journey towards exhaustion, presented in extreme slow motion photography.

What I find interesting in all these studies is how much information is readily available when we simply stop and take the time to look more closely. From my vantage point as an artist, it also appears to me that the closer we move towards the source of how things actually operate the more visually arresting they seem to become; as if the observer is rewarded for his/her need to dig deeper. To me it feels as if there is some genuine power in these simple films; certainly something fundamental at play; and perhaps the natural world seduces us with its beauty in order to insure its many intricacies are uncovered – and, equally, that the observer will be smitten by its charms when they are.
