Animate presents three works from susan pui san lok's RoCH Fans & Legends (2015) project - a series that includes single-channel and multi-screen moving image commissions for gallery and online, and a limited edition artist’s book.

Commissioned by QUAD and CFCCA (Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art) in partnership with Animate Projects and University of Salford. Supported using public funding from the National Lottery by Arts Council England.

Biography

susan pui san lok's work ranges across installation, moving image, sound, performance and text, evolving out of interests in notions of nostalgia and aspiration, place and migration, translation and diaspora. She received a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Feminism and the Visual Arts from the University of Leeds, followed by a PhD with Aavaa (the African and Asian VIsual Artists Archive) at the University of East London. She is currently Associate Professor in Fine Art at Middlesex University, London.

Previous projects include: Lightness (2012), commissioned by Film & Video Umbrella (FVU) and De La Warr Pavilion; Faster, Higher (2008), commissioned by FVU and BFI Southbank Gallery, London, also staged at Hatton Gallery, Newcastle (2009), Winchester Discovery Centre (2012), and MAI Montreal Arts Interculturels, Montreal (2014); DIY Ballroom/Live (2007-08), a Cornerhouse/BBC Bigger Picture national touring commission; and Golden (2005-ongoing), commissioned by Beaconsfield, London, and Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester. Forthcoming exhibitions include the 5th Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Museum of Art (2015).

Grants and awards include: Arts Council England in 2005 and 2015; Arts and Humanities Research Council in 2005 and 2015; and Wellcome Trust in 2010 and 2011. She was nominated for the Film London Jarman Award in 2013.
