Having studied Fine Art at Middlesex University and Filmmaking at San Francisco Art Institute, Emily Richardson has gone on to make several films that have been widely exhibited both in the UK and internationally.

Working with 16mm film and multiple screen video installations, her focus is landscape, spaces, environments and our relationship to them, whether it be a forest, a strip of coastline or a tower block. She uses the photographic nature and temporal qualities of film to create impossible experiences of architectural spaces and natural environments.

The techniques employed in the films, such as time-lapse, are often that of the documentary genre but the results are far less familiar. All the work comes from observation but through the use of framing, editing and sound each ‘portrait’ becomes a subjective one, much more about the feeling of the place than its function. The films create an alternative perspective from which to view the world that perhaps momentarily changes the way we look at it.

Richardson’s films are distributed by LUX and have been shown in galleries and at festivals internationally including Tate Britain, Artist’s Space, New York and Edinburgh, London, Rotterdam and New York film festivals.
