Musical Chairs is a playful exploration of movement and the transfer of energy between people and objects.

It was created by London College of Communication animation students as part of the ‘From Free Radicals to Free-Running’, workshop run by LCC Animate Artist-in-Residence Riccardo Iacono.

The works produced during my Animate residency form part of my gaming project, Chucky. It is an expanding body of over 20 video performances and interventions created in private and public spaces using the techniques of video recording and throwing objects.

The objects I throw are like avatars and range from peas to articles of clothing and materials found in situ. I use this process to explore the relationships of the body, image and place and as a means of optical, physical and social engagement, and of material and cultural analysis and manipulation.

Among my concerns are themes of difference, displacement, conflict and play. I am particularly interested in psychogeography and the public’s hypersensitivity and insensitivity to unconventional behaviour. I am interested in how images are formed and refreshed by eye and body movement; how physical and psychological disturbances and irregularities are filtered, amplified and suppressed.

Summer Shows (2007), Missing (2007) and Elephant (2007), for example, use throwing as a means of interfacing with architecture and people, and focus on the disorientating gyrations of eye and camera movement. Repetitive throwing functions as a coping mechanism and as a way of negotiating time, space and memory and testing the boundaries between imaginary and real-world order.
