Paint Unpaint recreates portions of Hans Namuth’s film Jackson Pollock 51, which shows the painter painting on a pane of glass installed between Pollock and the camera lens, as an animation. Namuth’s and Pollock’s collaboration could already be seen as a form of animation where Pollock’s well-known drip paintings became alive and resulted in a moving image. By redrawing the film using today’s technology Paint Unpaint updates this 1950s experiment and integrates the painter and painting into a new moving painting.

At PEER, Kota Ezawa has drawn our attention to the specificity of the windows as a barrier between the inner and outer space of the gallery and the street.
