Synopsis
The Butler Brothers parody the utopian vision of home shopping and entertainment on the digital superhighways of the 21st century. From city to suburb to cyburb, The City Is No Longer Safe questions the suggested potential for virtual reality as the final retreat from the material world. Satirical cartoon capers meet overstated 3-D computer graphics to create bunnies trying to survive in a consumer cyberworld. Instead of a bright future of freely available information, the Butlers suggest that the prospect for cyberspace is a dark mirror of the society it wishes to supercede.
Programme notes
Before gaining popular success with their 'Workgroup Alpha' series for E4, the Butler Brothers took the naïve, breeze-block style of cheap 3D animation and produced this discordant satire of a rabbit society in an urban security compound.
Biography
The Butler Brothers were born in Scotland. Their filmography includes utopian parody The City is No Longer Safe in 1994 and THEWAYTHINGSR, a computer animation exploring the death of the future in 1998. Between 2003 and 2008 the Butler Brothers created a series of Information Art films that hail the death of the future, including Human Trial: an extraordinary rendition to a Chamber of Commerce, 2005.
