Animate Projects and the The Showroom Gallery have co-commissioned two new works by Sebastian Buerkner: Blur Belt, a large-scale projection and Intimate Customs, a six screen DVD installation.

Blur Belt refers to the language of film to create a sophisticated work that signals a shift in his practice. Made up of five distinct chapters, each beginning with the establishing shot of a vertically striped, opaque glass door accompanied by an evocative soundtrack that refers to a history of filmmaking from Hitchcock to Lynch.

Intimate Customs acts in some ways as sketches for Blur Belt. Through the combination of abstraction and imagery, Buerkner creates associations between emotions and values such as colour, form and speed. This is then combined with soundtracks that disrupt the viewer's ability to process the images and thereby unlocks the door into their subconscious.

The Showroom

The signature aspect of The Showroom’s exhibition policy is to offer an artist their first solo show in London. Recent reviews of the gallery’s artistic policy have meant that The Showroom now focuses only on commissioning individual artists to make new work for the space.

The gallery is unique in the way that it works with artists. They are supported through all aspects of the commissioning process artistically, financially and administratively, while the exhibition schedule affords them the time to develop and finally realise the work on site.
